Labor inspection in Estonia checked 66 construction sites. The inspectors established 130 violations, five of them needed an investigation. Only four construction sites haven’t revealed any noncompliances, according to err.ee.
Labor inspection run a targeted check of construction sites without warning in April 2017. Attention was mainly paid to falling from elevations prevention. As the assistant general manager of Labor Inspection Apo Oya said, the situation on construction sites improves every year, but occupational safety has not become a natural part of the working process. “Falls from elevations are one of the most frequent accident types, and their consequences are very difficult or even fatal, – Oya said. – Unfortunately, this time we also noticed that on many sites people still take insane risks and try to check the laws of physics. Safety skirts are often absent and fall arresters aren’t used. There is no sense in body harnesses and life lines left in a car when working on a house roof”.
Labor inspection emphasizes that the operators responsible for occupational safety on site should outwatch the compliance with safety requirements. For example, it is necessary to remember that the ladder is supposed to serve the up and down movement and not the work. There were 407 occupational accidents on building sites last year. Grave health damage was the result of 105 of them, eight people died.
